low back pain exercise specialist

Did you know that more than 80% of the population suffer from low back pain at some time during their life?   It is one of the most common reasons why people take time off work.  Acute back pain can make daily life difficult and sufferers often become inactive to avoid pain.  However, it has been shown that regular exercise can be beneficial.

I hold a Level 4 Certificate in Exercise for the Management of Low Back Pain; a high level qualification that provides the key skills and knowledge required to deliver and design progressive exercise programmes for clients with low back pain.  This allows me to understand low back pain and related issues such as postural problems, range of movement, muscle imbalances and psychological barriers.  I feel this qualification compliments my role as a Biomechanics Coach and do believe that simply helping people move more easily will have a large positive impact on their life.helen-stretching

running coach

helen-marchingRunning forms the basis of most sports.  Yet, in the main, we are inefficient at it.

In recent years, running and multi-sport events involving running have become very popular.  And why not?  They are fun, good for weight loss, social, easy to train for etc. etc.  However what I do find interesting is that everyone thinks they can run – if you want to play tennis you go learn how to play, if you want to start golf you go take advice on clubs etc. etc.  But not running.  People start to pound the streets and often things go wrong.

I am an England Athletics Coach in Running Fitness meaning I specialise in coaching distances from 5k upwards offtrack.  Combining this with my interest in biomechanics and my own personal running experience I can help you with injury prevention, training schedules and cross training, running form and all other things running!

biomechanics

Should your knees fall in when you squat? Yes. If you are in a controlled environment, ie. you are lifting your one rep max and can recover it. No if you a) have no idea you are doing it and b) if you did you could not correct it. There is a big difference.

I am a qualified Biomechanics Coach with Biomechanics Education. Since initially qualifying as a personal trainer I have become much more interested in moving people correctly and trying to help them improve their posture and alignment.   Biomechanics is about those actions we do subconsciously – not just in the gym environment but in everyday life. Movements that we take for granted but may well be doing incorrectly causing pain or imbalance in our body. Movements that could be placing strain on various joints, soft tissue and other muscles disrupting the body’s ability to work efficiently. In some this appears as pain, in others loss of power and usually in a completely different part of the body to the actual problem.

In layman’s terms, actions we do in our daily life could be causing more harm than good. For instance sitting at a desk, driving, carrying the baby on one hip….etc etc.

I offer a Biomechanics Screening to help you understand where your own “problem areas” might be. The Screening will highlight areas of your body that are restricted and potentially affecting your ability to carry out day to day tasks, sports or activities competently.  I can then extend this out onto the gym floor and advise on appropriate exercise or alternatively give you movements you can do at home.

exercise referral for health management

I hold a Level 3 Diploma in Exercise Referral which qualifies me to accept GP referrals for common conditions such as Hypertension, Obesity, Diabetes, COPD, Asthma, Osteoporosis and Arthritis as well as providing a more comprehensive specialist service to non-referred clients who suffer from these conditions.  Regular exercise is proven to help manage these medical conditions.
